Nov 15 @ 8:00 pm

Weald History Group

Wednesday November 15, 8pm start, Memorial Hall : Mary Smith will tell us about ‘A Schoolgirl’s War’ and introduces it here :

“I was headteacher of Maidstone Grammar School for Girls until 2014 and have recently produced a book entitled “A Schoolgirl’s War”. This features the exquisite and highly original art work of the art teacher at that school during WW2. She set out to document in paint and pencil the lives of school children as the war unfolded. I don’t think there is a similar collection of paintings anywhere. I also contacted 53 “old girls” who were at the school during the war. They shared their fascinating memories and anecdotes with me – which included disrupted schooling, air-raids, doodlebugs, and underground lessons in shelters. My talk would include a selection of these paintings and anecdotes. “
